Why a Laser Projector?
Looking at the development history of television, we can roughly sum up. That is:
- A process of continuous growth in size and

- Then from CRT to plasma to liquid crystal

For a long period of time, television has been limited to the light-emitting principle. But now it has reached the top in terms of size, power consumption, technology, and price; especially for the large screen market of 70 inches or more, which is hardly a choice for ordinary consumers.
Hisense foresaw the development bottleneck of traditional TV 10 years ago and began to lay out the field of laser television. In 2014, it released the world’s first DLP ultra-short-focus 4K laser cinema-television, which has caused a sensation in the industry.
In the following years, Hisense continues updating the laser television and brought the latest generation of L5 laser projector this year.
L5’s biggest advantage is to solve the two major pain points that have constrained laser television. One is brightness, and the other is the price. According to the official introduction, the brightness of Hisense L5 laser projector is up to 400 nits, and it is equipped with the original custom Danish new generation DNP high-gain anti-light hard screen.

80-inch giant screen installation
First of all, it is important to understand how laser projection works. In simple terms, similar to the principle of a projector. This technology first processes the image signal digitally and then projects the light through a series of complicated lenses. Therefore, in terms of the lighting principle, there is an essential difference between a laser projector and a conventional TV.
Traditional LCD TVs emit light through a backlight, and then the liquid crystal molecules deflect to achieve image display; the laser projectors projects light onto a medium (such as a wall, Curtains, etc.) that transmit images through the reflection of light to the human eye, and can project an extremely large picture at a very short physical distance.
Then we come to understand the appearance and installation of Hisense L5 Laser projector. The installation process is much simpler than the traditional TV. The 80-inch large screen only needs two holes on the wall. A simple bracket can fix the screen (the screen itself is much lighter than traditional TVs). PS: The test environment of our evaluation room is not fixed on the wall, so it is fixed with an iron frame.
Hisense L5’s design
The following is an introduction to the design section. First of all, the Hisense L5 is mainly composed of two main parts: the screen and the host.
The screen part uses an 80-inch original Danish new generation DNP high-gain anti-hard and hard-screen, also has a very narrow border, which actually brings more good presence and immersion experience.
The biggest feature of this bionic screen is its soft viewing effect and the color performance is better. It overcomes the problem of traditional electric video flash, natural comfort, and can also shield the ambient light.
The core part of the Hisense L5 is the ultra-short focus laser light source. Compared with last year’s L6 series, its body is reduced by 40%. The design is square above and stable. At the same time, it is relatively simple to see from the front.
The front panel of the Hisense L5 is the speaker part. It adopts a front sound design and it is arranged symmetrically with left and right sides. This design creates a surround sound field based on the user’s transmission of sound. It is reported that L5 built Dolby’s panoramic sound for the first time, do not have to pass a complex connection external sound, built-in sound comes with surround sound, to create a good sound in all directions.
On the side of the fuselage, it is part of the heat vent to ensure a long and stable work of the fuselage.
The mirror on the main unit is as bright and clear as an ultra-high resolution display. The internal image through the ultra-short focal lens, multi-layer reflection, and refraction, so the fiber will be relatively soft and many, do not irritate the eyes when viewed. In addition, the interface configuration on the host is still relatively rich, 3 HDMI plus 2 USB interfaces, fully meet your audio and video transmission needs.
Hisense L5 projector is equipped with a minimalist remote control. The metal body is highly textured and you can definitely put it down. It is also equipped with a quick-switch button, and can also be customized in the system with one-touch direct features, fast, minimalist handling experience to meet the entertainment needs of all family members.
Quality measurement: this is really not inferior to high-end LCD TVs
Due to the difference in the principle of light emission, we used the test standard of a projector instead of a test device that tests ordinary televisions, just like many other media counterparts.
However, the projector test has a disadvantage. The brightness measured by the illuminometer is not the brightness actually viewed by the user, but the brightness before being projected onto the screen. So, since this time Hisense L5 laser projector is the ordinary TV, then we will directly introduce the TV test standard using BM-7 luminance meter.
First, the brightness of the light source defaults to bright mode. The maximum brightness of the measured center point reaches 381 nits, and the brightness on both sides of the screen is slightly lower, reaching 350 nits.
Despite slight differences from the nominal 400 nits, this is also completely within a reasonable error range. It is much higher than the 300 nits of most TVs on the market. The brightness of the black field is lower than the test limit of the equipment in the all black room conditions. We can say that the contrast performance is very good.
The color spectrum is an important parameter reflecting good or bad color. Hisense L5 measured NTSC color spectrum of 84.69%. This is significantly higher than the current color television range of about 75% of mainstream television. The performance is very good. The advantage of the high color spectrum is that more levels of color are displayed.
4K High Definition
Next, in the 4K HDR format video test session, the Hisense L5 can automatically identify HDR format videos (with HDR logo in the upper right corner), playing smoothly. In HDR mode, the brightness contrast of the screen is obviously better, the performance is relatively excellent.
At the same time, for the HDR mode movie itself, HDR standard, HDR theater, HDR bright, and HDR game modes are adjustable. This is a setting that other TVs do not have. You can carefully observe the changes in the picture under different modes. The standard mode is more natural, and the other modes will be more colorful. Of course, each person’s usage habits are different and they can compare and choose on their own.
Hisense L5 has 4K Ultra HD resolution, which can bring true and fine picture effects. In order to more intuitively reflect the quality performance of the Hisense L5 projector, we have taken a series of pictures. Through this set of pictures, we mainly reflect the red, green, and blue color reproduction capabilities as well as the strong performance of viewing and shadowing. As you can see in the following figure, such as the details of the details of the light and shade, the richness of the color performance is better.
The following is a real shot of the 4K ultra-clear demonstration film. It can also see its excellent color performance in the real beat part of the ultra-clear demonstration film. It focuses on observing the details of the model clothes and the changes in the color levels in the background. The image quality of the Hisense L5 projector is not inferior to LCD TVs. In addition, through the TV’s USB port external hard disk playtest, you can perfectly play all kinds of bitrate 4K video.
It is worth mentioning that in the playback of ordinary non-HDR mode videos, we can also turn on the HDR enhancement function. You can see in the following two pictures that the effect after opening is very obvious. The color of the petal part is brighter and clearer.
Summary: The performance of brightness, color spectrum, and picture quality has surpassed most ordinary televisions. At the same time, the details of the picture are rich, and the color reproduction is more real and natural.
